چکیده
The first studies of the zoology oi" XortLeiu Calilbruia of which we have any record were those of Dr. J. S. Xewberry, iu conuectiou with the Pacific llailroad Surveys of uearly thirty years ago.* Subsequently, collections of mammals, birds, and reptiles were made at Fort Crook by Lieut. John Feilner and D. F. Parkinson, and at Yreka by Mr. William Vuille, but no publications on the subject appeared after the Eeports of the Pacific Eailroad Surveys until Mr. 11. W. Henshaw, iu 1878, studied the ornithology of the northeastern portion of the State in connection with United States Geographical Surveys west of the 100th meridian. !

Complete mitochondrial genome suggests diapsid affinities of turtles.
Despite more than a century of debate, the evolutionary position of turtles (Testudines) relative to other amniotes (reptiles, birds, and mammals) remains uncertain. One of the major impediments to resolving this important evolutionary problem is the highly distinctive and enigmatic morphology of turtles that led to their traditional placement apart from diapsid reptiles as sole descendants of ...
متن کاملCORE-SINEs: eukaryotic short interspersed retroposing elements with common sequence motifs.
A 65-bp "core" sequence is dispersed in hundreds of thousands copies in the human genome. This sequence was found to constitute the central segment of a group of short interspersed elements (SINEs), referred to as mammalian-wide interspersed repeats, that proliferated before the radiation of placental mammals. Here, we propose that the core identifies an ancient tRNA-like SINE element, which su...
متن کاملAnalysis of Prey Remains Excavated from an Historic Bald Eagle Nest Site on San Miguel Island, California
This paper reconstructs the food habits of bald eagles (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) that nested historically on San Miguel Island by analyzing prey remains recovered from an historic nest site. Of the 9,946 faunal elements recovered, 9,743 (98%) were from vertebrates and 203 (2.0%) were from invertebrates. Based on minimum number of individuals, the percent diet composition for this sample was 61...
متن کاملSexual maturity in growing dinosaurs does not fit reptilian growth models.
Recent histological studies suggest relatively rapid growth in dinosaurs. However, the timing of reproductive maturity (RM) in dinosaurs is poorly known because unambiguous indicators of RM are rare. One exception is medullary bone (MB), which is an ephemeral bony tissue that forms before ovulation in the marrow cavities of birds as a calcium source for eggshelling. Recently, MB also was descri...
متن کاملInfluence of Scale on the Management of Wildlife in California Oak Woodlands
Distributions, abundances, and patterns of resource use of amphibians, reptiles, birds, and small mammals varied spatially and temporally in California oak woodlands. Spatial variations occurred within stands, between stands of a similar type (e.g., canyon live oak [Quercus chrysolepis], blue oak [Q. douglasii], or valley oak [Q. lobata]), between stand types, and between geographic areas. Temp...
